Garage Flooring Ideas

Updated on June 2, 2010

Should You Finish Your Garage Floors?

My garage floor is solid concrete and although that is alright, I always envy my neibor's garage. He has some plastic / rubber coating over the whole thing and it is a big step up from what I have. One of the nicest things about having a finished floor like he does is that it isn't freezing cold to walk on. My concrete floor is cold and hard which make using shoes highly desirable. With his floor, he can walk in it in his socks and have it feel like an extension of the house.

Sealing Your Garage Floor

My neighbors garage floor isn't "sealed" like some people have done. It is just covered nicely which I suppose is a way of sealing it. However, if you truly want to seal your garage floor and protect it from all the elements, you can do that too. Of all the garage flooring ideas, sealing it with an epoxy sealer is probably the most popular. This is because epoxy is inexpensive, dries quickly, and is quite strong. An epoxy resine floor sealer seems to have all the best attributes in one.

Preparing Your Garage Floor

Before you put any mats on your garage floor or start to seal it with an epoxy formula, you need to make sure the floor is as clean as you can get it. Pressure washing it first is always a good idea and sweeping out the dirt in the corners is a must too. After washing it, you need to make sure it is very dry as that is the whole point of sealing it in the first place. Sealing your garage floor will make it look better but the main reason is to protect it from all the wear and tear it will see and all the dirt your car will bring in. Moisture is an enemy of your garage so you want to make sure your garage floor is very dry before you seal it or cover it in some other way.

Cool Ideas With Your New "Sealed" Garage

Your garage doesn't have to be only for parking your car or storing boxes with junk in them. If you have the room, you can make part of your garage into an office, game room, hobbyroom, or workshop. All of these things will be much more enjoyable if you get your garage floor sealed or covered first. Again, finishing your garage floor is somthing that will allow you to enjoy your garage. If you put in some nice rubber mats you will be able to walk right into your garage like it is any other room in the house. One of the cool garage ideas is to make it into a game room. Just to show you one of the things that can be done, take a look at the video below of a tandem garage that was turned into a ping pong area. Looks fun deosn't it?
